Alison Mattek is a postdoctoral research scientist in the department of psychology at the University of Oregon. She works in the Computational Social Neuroscience Lab, and received her PhD in the Psychological and Brain Sciences from Dartmouth College.


After learning from her about the Mind of the Body with her slides, We discuss the following:

  • How the brain see dynamic images, things in motion, vs a captured image via photos
  • How technology might be changing our brain function
  • How managing food addiction is similar to managing the social media addiction
  • How physical injury, trauma and pain is interpreted in the brain
  • How the brain learns the patterns that leads to pain and creates avoidance patterns
  • How our brain is designed to mirror action and emotions
  • How to train the brain past fear, when fear is healthy and how there is wisdom within fear
  • How having a strong sense of identity is important when dealing with other’s emotions
